Report a profileBEFORE YOU HIRE
How to choose a caregiver with confidence.
You are the one hiring, so you are the one who checks. Here is exactly how careful families do it, from our clinicians.
01
Ask the right interview questions
- How much experience do you have with someone recovering from what my family member had?
- Are you comfortable with medications, mobility help, and the specific tasks I need?
- What days and hours can you reliably commit to?
- Can you give me two references I can call?
02
Check references, every time
- Call at least two past families, not just read a note.
- Ask: Were they reliable? Would you hire them again? Why did the job end?
- Confirm dates and duties match what the caregiver told you.
03
Run a background check yourself
- You can order a background check on a person you plan to hire through consumer screening services (search 'employment background check for hiring a caregiver').
- Ask the caregiver for consent in writing first, as the law requires.
- Verify any license they claim (CNA, HHA, RN) with your state's licensing board.
04
Watch for red flags
- Pressure to pay large amounts up front or in cash only.
- Vague answers about experience, or no references at all.
- Reluctance to consent to a background check.
- Anything that makes you or your family member uneasy. Trust that.
